Professional Phrases for Restating Instructions
Restating instructions takes thirty seconds. It prevents hours of rework. And it signals the kind of rigour and precision that builds a strong professional reputation.
Most professionals skip it entirely. They receive instructions, nod, and leave the meeting — hoping their interpretation is correct. Often it is not.
Phrases for Restating Instructions
After receiving a task or brief
"Just to make sure I've got this right — you'd like me to [restate task], by [deadline], with [specific requirement]. Is that correct?"
"So the key deliverable is [restate], the deadline is [date], and the priority is [specific focus] — is that right?"
After complex or multi-step instructions
"Just to check I've got the sequence right — the first step is [step 1], then [step 2], and the final output is [deliverable]. Is that the right order?"
After instructions in a large meeting
"Just so I'm clear on my part — my action is to [restate your specific action] by [deadline]. Is that right?"
After receiving instructions by email
"Thank you for the brief. Just to confirm my understanding before I proceed: [restate instructions]. Please let me know if I've missed anything."
After ambiguous or incomplete instructions
"I've got a clear picture of the overall goal — I just want to confirm two specifics before I start. [Specific question 1] and [Specific question 2]. Then I'm confident I can deliver exactly what's needed."
The Restating Formula
- Signal — "Just to confirm..." / "Before I proceed..."
- Restate — summarise the task, deadline and key requirements in your own words
- Check — "Is that right?" / "Have I got that correctly?"
What to Avoid
❌ Nodding and leaving without restating — most common and most costly
❌ Restating but not asking for confirmation — you haven't verified your interpretation
❌ Waiting until after you've started work to check
